Default Removing apparent Temp files

I seem to have a number of files characterized by having a tilde in the
extension.

For example, I have:

Outlook.pst~T7743IMC
and
Outlook.pst

in the same folder.

I have over 9,500 of these files on my system.

Can they safely be deleted?

Thanks.

I would say yes, those files with ~ can be deleted especially if they are in
a temp folder.

Neil,

NONE of them are in temp folders. But they all seem to be copies of existing
files.

Does that change your thinking?

If you have such Outlook files something on your system is creating them,
and you need to know what
(they are not being created by win or Outlook, but some third party app)
Where are they located?

It's not only Outlook files that have these apparent mirrors; there are about
9,500 of these in multiple folders.

All of them located in the same folder as the similarly named original.

I am not certain of their origin, but I first noticed them after an Acronis
file recovery job (from a file backup) that was terminated abnormally.

I've not been able to confirm that as the origin, however, on the Acronis
forum. There's been no response to my posting about the issue.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Now you say that they could well be Acronis temp files that didn't recover
correctly when the program terminated. I don't know for sure though but does
the file date stamp seem to line up with the recovery failure.

I think I would move them to a separate folder and see what happens. (if
anything complains about not being able to find a file for example)

Sorry I can't help more.

Moving them is a good idea. I've got an external HD on order large enough to
image my entire drive, and I was going to do a full backup before deleting
them.

So far as the date/time stamps, the created and modified dates are identical to
the "base file" (the one without the tilde extension).

Still think moving is a good idea. I know I have done it when I'm unsure
about some files, then after a while you could delete them if all is ok.
