Setup Two Routers
ATT ARRIS Model NVG589 PN 587234-004-00
Amped R20000G router. Connected the ATT via Cat5 to the Amped. Still not sure where to connect on the Amped. Amped has a "modem" (WAN) connector and other switch ports. ATT is 2GHz only Amped is 2GHz and 5GHz. I have an IP conflict. Not sure why. A Win 7 PC on the ATT WiFi connection has very strange internet connections. Browsing to some WWW works but others do not. Some apps that need internet just do not connect. Sort of partial selected connections. Network show no connection. WiFi shows connected. But maybe this is a result of the IP conflict as reported by both a WinXP PC (on ATT WiFi) and a Win 7 PC (on ATT WiFi). I just now set the Amped to disable DCHP. I could not get to the Amped from the Win7 (ATT WiFi) PC but this Win7 PC could see the NAS connected to the Amped. All so confusing. I left unchanged this: Internet Connection Type Choices Manual IP (Static) Automatic Dynamic IP (DCHP) PPPOE - Login Required - selected PPTP - Login Required L2TP - Login Required For PPPoE Connection type Continuous Connect On Demand Manual Leave this or set to Manual IP Where do I plug in the Cat5 from the ATT. What other setting should I change? --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

What worked for me when I had one router from my ISP and another router with wireless and a 4 port Gb switch was the following: 1) Only one of the routers must give out ip-addresses, the other should act as a switch. Lets say the ATT ARRIS hands out IP-addresses in the range 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.250. Let the ATT have DHCP turned on. 2) Turn off DHCP on Amped, and assign it an ip-address above the range ATT hands out, for example 10.0.0.253. Be carefull not to give the Amped the same IP as the ATT. You can find the IP of the ATT by connecting a PC to it, and see the gateway that this PC has on the ethernet port that is connected to ATT. On a commandline type ipconfig and Enter. 3) Connect one of the normal switch ports on ATT directly to one of the normal switch ports on the Amped. 4) Now you leave the wireless enabled only on the router that has the best wireless. This should ensure that all devices have ip-adresses on the same net, no matter what switch/router they are connected to, and no matter if it is wireless or cabled. It should be possible to have wireless turned on for both routers if they have different SSID, but can't see any benefit from that, only possible conflicts with channels. -- Jesper Kaas - |

Setup Two Routers
If I do all of that except make the Amped IP base 192.168.3.1 while the
ATT is base 192.168.1.1 and leave both with WiFi on but set to different fixed channels OK? The ATT tech said I could use both WiFi and set fixed different channels. The only strange thing is that hen I first looked at the Amped with a application that shows WiFi and channels it was on channel 1. Then later it automatically switched to channel 11 which was an overlap. At that time the channel for the Amped was set to Automatic selection. but then I went in to set it to a fixed channel, channel 1 thru 4 was not in the select list, only 5 up. why was that? I need the WiFi on both since I have WiFi devices on each end of the house that need the closer stronger WiFi signal level. Also only the Amped provide 5GHz which I need. --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

To do this, set up as follows: ATT: Set device IP to 192.168.1.1, DHCP ON serving up IP addresses in the 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.100 range, WiFi ON using a fixed channel. AMPED: Set device IP to 192.168.1.150, DHCP OFF, WiFi ON using a different 2.4Ghz fixed channel than the ATT device and a different SSID. Connect ethernet cable from one of the ethernet ports on ATT to one of the ethernet ports on the AMPED, but do not use the specially designated WAN or INTERNET port (usually a different color or set off from the others) on the AMPED. Using one of the regular ports lets the AMPED simply act as a switch/access point and the DHCP server on the ATT should assign all IP addresses through it. |

Sometimes it is better to use a (another/separate) 'dedicated' access point (which has no other LAN-related purpose) to solve the geometry. It seems to me that you need to decide on one router DHCP to be 'in charge' of giving the NAT IPs to all of the devices. It also seems that the Amped is the 'stronger'/more flexible of the two in that regard. I don't see how the Moto/Arris is going to be able to serve in two different roles, one role, giving up the WAN IP to the Amped to manage as the primary NAT device and the other being just a wifi AP or switch; but then maybe I'm not turning my imagination loose outside the box. -- Mike Easter |

You typically want all devices throughout the house to be on the same subnet
so you can share files, printers, etc. throughout the house. To do this, set up as follows: ATT: Set device IP to 192.168.1.1, DHCP ON serving up IP addresses in the 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.100 range, WiFi ON using a fixed channel. The ATT box is accessed at 192.168.1.254 by entering a password. The Amped box is accessed at 192.168.3.1 by entering password. How do I work with that? Making an uneducated guess that by subnets you mean 192.168.1 .0 thru .255 Where 192.168.1 is the "base". When I Googled subnets I got more confused. And the subnet mask I should leave alone. AMPED: Set device IP to 192.168.1.150, DHCP OFF, WiFi ON using a different 2.4Ghz fixed channel than the ATT device and a different SSID. -- -- No signature --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |
