Windows XP License
Does any one else think it sucks that if you pay $200 for a full copy of
Windows XP you can only load it on one computer and have to pay for additonal licenses for other personal computers that you own? These are personal PCs not company owned. |

I find it a bit dumb to ask a question like this on a Windows XP newsgroup. Take it up with MS. |

These are personal PCs not company owned. It has always been one licensed Microsoft OS per computer, regardless of whether it is for use in the home or in a business. Most businesses opt for "Volume Licensing" but they are required to prove that every single computer is properly licensed from the "volume license" set. |

Windows XP License
A Windows XP license can only be used on one (1)
computer. A second installation requires a second license. From the Windows XP EULA: 1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Software on a single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation Computer"). The Software may not be used by more than two (2) processors at any one time on any single Workstation Computer. Please read your End-User License Agreement by going to Start Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter. Then click on "End-User License Agreement". If you already have a retail copy of Windows XP, you can obtain additional licenses for another computer or laptop by visiting the following Microsoft Web site: http://shop.microsoft.com/special/wal/walinfo.asp -- Carey Frisch Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Microsoft Community Newsgroups news://msnews.microsoft.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------Â*---------------- "frauimp" wrote: | Does any one else think it sucks that if you pay $200 for a full copy of | Windows XP you can only load it on one computer and have to pay for additonal | licenses for other personal computers that you own? Not really. That's pretty much that it's always been for almost every commercial software product on the planet. It's called "free enterprise" and "capitalism." If you want a free ride through life, move to one of the few remaining communist utopias. These are personal PCs not company owned. Totally irrelevant. -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -Benjamin Franklin |

No, it's not just Widnows XP. That's been the rule for every version of Windows since 3.1, and is also the rule with almost every other piece of commercial software. These are personal PCs not company owned. Like you, I wish that for home users, they had a license that was good for an enitire household. But they don't. Like any company selling any product, they have the right to set the terms for the sale. You have the right to accept those terms if you like them, or not to buy the product if you don't like them. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup |

I am sure most would prefer a more lenient licensing policy.
That does not only go for Microsoft but any licensed software. Because of the terms, I have more $ invested on my computers that I would have liked to spend elsewhere. But like everyone else, I had a choice and I made it. The creators set the licensing terms and it is up to the buyer to accept the terms or not. If the terms are unacceptable, there are alternatives and some of them are free. No one is forced to buy any operating system. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "frauimp" wrote in message ... Just curious, and not to raise any issues, but what does the statement "The

If your computer has MORE than 2 physical CPU's then you can't use it on that computer. Not true (at least as far as I know). The issue is really a technical one, not a licensing one. XP Professional will support only two processors. As far as I know, you can run it on a computer with more than two processors, but it will use only two of them (just as XP Home will run on a computer with two processors, but use only one of them). -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup Most people don't have access to a Quad CPU computer that would have to worry about that restriction. |
