It would also help if you let us know what version of Roxio (CD/DVD burning
program is suspect) you are trying to install. Versions earlier than IIRC 5
would not work with XP and there are many patches to versions 5, 6, & 7 for
XP. There are also system specific patches (by the computer manufacturer)
to allow some software to work with XP.

Default Xp and Roxio

I first tried to install Easy Media Creator 7.5 then Easy Media Creator 8.
It just lost the two DVD drive I have and went I did a system restore they
came back.

I am consulting the Roxio website to see if they might have something to
help me. The reason I asked the question here is there was a FAQ covering
EMC 5.

Thanks for any assistance.

This may correct the problem but I can't recall what the update was to
correct. IT will be on their web site.

You are going in the right direction with attempting to get the problem
solved by going to Roxio for the fix.

I am running Roxio 8.05 now on three different systems with no problem at
all. As a matter of fact, I used their disk copy program today to copy a
dual layer DVD without a problem. The only complaint I have with their
software it that it takes a long time to start almost any of the programs.
Once started they normally work fine.

Thanks for all the advice. I am hoping the problem also stems from the fact
I did not have service pack 2 installed which is a requirement for this
software.

Once again thanks.

All those responses and none gave you this answer...

You could have brought your CD/DVD drives back with a registry hack.
However - you should really get a version of the software where you meet all
the requirements for it...

Do NOT be afraid of the registry hack here. It is SAFE and has helped MANY
people.
Respect the registry, don't fear it.

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

Or try this:

http://www.dougknox.com/

Select 'Windows Utilities' and scroll down to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to
Windows Explorer.'
Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)
