Default USB port problems with hp printer

I have a ne Hp Photosmart C5180 All in one printer. Installed correctly, it
worked for one week. Then for some reason, computer disconnected printer.
USB port would not recognize printer. With help of HP help service, ended up
uninstalling drivers, entering C prompt window and typing stuff in to make it
work. For some reason, USB port had dissappeared. This worked. Printer
worked for three weeks, then again printer disconnected, USB port not
recognizing printer. This happened after an update patch for XP. I've
uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled, worked with HP support. USB port
still not recognizing hardware. I've given up.
Any suggestions as to how to get computer to recognize hardware, USB
ports,...keep printer talking to computer for more than three weeks at a time?

Two things come to mind--
Three week interval is a bit odd to say the least. I don't know what might
match this interval---update to something, malware, system backup ??
On the second go around, did you uninstall and reinstall the USB drivers as
well as the printer drivers?

I was doing the automatic Windows update. That just happened to be three
weeks after the printer started working.
As far as uninstalling and reinstalling USB drivers, I never considered
that, and I do not know how to do that. Any instructions...?

Default USB port problems with hp printer

I am having the same problem with my USB HP Printer and HP Scanner. Had to
resort to using the Parallel Port. If you want to try uninstalling the USB
Controllers rt click MyComputerselect PropertiesHardwareDevice
ManagerUSB Controllers. rt click on each one and choose Uninstall. Restart
and let WinXP reinstall them. Good Luck.

Default USB port problems with hp printer

I tried deleting the USB ports. I succeeded in disabling my keyboard and
mouse (both usb connected), and was glad to find my old keyboard and mouse.
They helped get me up and running again.
Unfortunately, the printed is still being treated as an unknown device by
windows. I will try the parallel port connection and see if that works.
