Warning box, DEP problems
Hello All,
I'm constantly getting a warning box that tells me ("Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft......To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program - "Internet Explorer") Followed up with another warning box that says ("Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" These warnings occur after every session of IE8, and after some programs that I run. I had just installed Zone Alarm's Security Suite, then the problems started, since then I've uninstalled Security Suite, and returned my computer to the previous conditons, and still same problems. Zone Alarm tech support told me it's a Windows issue to fix. I have tried both options under DEP at: system properties performance options DEP tab: that is both the "Turn on DEP for essentials" & "Turn on DEP for all" and still the warning boxes continue. Even if I add IE8 to the list, the warning boxes continue to appear. I've run a full computer virus scan by NOD32, no problmes. My machine stats: XP Media Edition, Internet Explorer 8, SP3. Please help, I can't get these warning boxes to go away. Really annoying |

And there is a switch to add to your boot.ini if you know how to edit it, to turn off all DEP for everything. You can find it under Google. And all DEP problems will disappear if you want to go that route. -- Bill Asus EEE PC 702G4 ~ 2GB RAM ~ 16GB-SDHC Xandros Linux (build 2007-10-19 13:03) |

Really annoying So, according to the error message you mention, the DEP alert occurs when you are using Internet Explorer, an important fact that you omitted to mention. DEP protection was added back in IE7 but it was defaulted to disabled due to expectation that many add-ons were badly coded and the error alert would cause too many problems. Because of the time available for beta testing of IE8, add-on authors were expected to ensure their add-on was compatible with IE8. DEP protection is enabled by default in IE8. So it looks like you installed a crappy add-on with poor coding practices regarding memory boundaries and IE8 is preventing that add-on from functioning (which means not letting IE8 load to let the add-on do whatever corruption it might inflict on your host). You can go into advanced config for IE8 and disable the memory protection feature. Sure, that would resolve the error but still mean you have a corruptive add-on installed in IE8. Better would be to uninstall the defective add-on. Then check if a later version of the add-on is available that is IE8 compatible and whose coding doesn't generate a DEP alert. If there is no later version of the add-on, well, add-ons are never critical (just desirable) so you'll have to do without it. To find out the offending add-on, disable all of them (or just the non-Microsoft add-ons). Retest to see if the DEP error still occurs in IE8. If not, reenable them one at a time and retest. When the DEP error reappears, it was due to the just previous add-on that you reenabled. |

Warning box, DEP problems
Thank you PA Bear,
You've saved my butt in the past, and again this time. As well as thanks to BillW50 and VanguardLH. Thank you all. I followed the link provided by PA Bear, took me to an article by Vincenzo "EricLaw's IEinternals", and ultimately after playing with "process explorer" and "manage addons" I was able to find the offending addon that was causing the DEP warning boxes to appear after all my IE8 sessions. Once I "disabled" the offending addon, (I had to go through the process of elimination as suggested in the EricLaw's article) then all was good! The problem addon for my situation was something I had remembered downloading from Dell several years ago, called "Drive Letter Solutions, by Sonic Solutions". After disabling that, for now at least, no more DEP warning boxes. Another box appeared after disabling the addon telling me that my addon version was not compatible with IE8, (whereas in the past it was okay with IE7). So, now I'm going to try reinstalling the original program that "I" originally thought was causing the problem somehow. I still don't get the association with the new program I had attempted to install (remember Zone Alarm's Security Suite) and how this particular addon somehow just at the exact same time started to be a problem all of a sudden? Don't want to probably know, TMI most likely........ But thanks to you good folks at this forum, I'm now equipped to handle DEP to some degree. Much appreciated. cordially, Robert S. 10/21/09, 8:35pm PST "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: Start he http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...3-52211a7e7d22 -- IE-specific newsgroup: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...plorer.general ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 www.banthecheck.com Robert wrote: Hello All, I'm constantly getting a warning box that tells me ("Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft......To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program - "Internet Explorer") Followed up with another warning box that says ("Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" These warnings occur after every session of IE8, and after some programs that I run.
