Can someone recommend a browser (extension) that can prevent that? I don't want to prevent flash from running (many of the above mentioned annoyware ads can bypass a flash-blocker). I'd want to completely prevent even downloading this crap that steals my bandwith. Regards Laszlo All you need is Firefox. When using extensions, you have the choice of: Ask to Activate, Never Activate, Always Activate. ??? Can you please ellaborate? I'm using Firefox 28. Click on Firefox in the upper left corner of the page. This opens the menu. Click on Add Ons. Click on Plugins. To the left of each plugin you will see a box, that by default says Always Activate. Click on that box and you will see two more choices, which are, Never Activate, and Always activate. If you choose Ask to Activate, and go to a website that requires Flash, you will see a black box where the Flash player should be, and in that box you will see a message that says Active Flash. I you choose to activate Flash, you will be asked to Activate and Remember, or Activate Now. Activated Now will just allow Flash one time. Is something like that also possible with google chrome? In addition to AdBLockPlus for Chrome, I'd also recommend three other extensions for Chrome that are available for free from the Chrome store.... 1) Opt out of the Google analytics garbage.... https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...ytics-opt-out/ fllaojicojecljbmefodhfapmkghcbnh 2) Remove the redirects from the Google search result. Every time you click a search result, your selection goes "through" Google and in addition to knowing what you are searching on, they are also aware of every search result page you click on. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...gle-redirects/ ccenmflbeofaceccfhhggbagkblihpoh I have found this extension especially useful when I am using the MVPS HOSTS file I linked to in another post. There are times when I DO want to go to a Google results "Sponsored Link", but some of those Google "sponsored sites" click-throughs (through Google) are blocked by the MVPS HOSTS file. By removing those "black-listed" click-through redirects from 'the click', I am able to visit those "sponsored sites". 3) Why would I middle-click to open a link in a new tab, and then NOT want that new tab to be moved to the front? This extension adds that function, so when you middle-click a link to open a new tab, that tab is brought to the foreground right way. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...-to-the-front/ hjaooagfdhdhmbfchnkhggjmacjlacla Adding these 3 extensions really make Chrome much more friendly to use. (For those 'into' browsing Craigslist, there is also an extension that shows the images in an ad as thumbnails of the C/L search results page so it's far easier to scan CL search results.... https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...Lextension.jpg ....however, the latest version there didn't work properly in the Linux version of Chrome, so I am using one version back v1.0.28. This is a .. ....uh. I see this is no longer in the Chrome Store. What was nice about this C/L one, is it's just an image previewer. It doesn't do all the other cr*p that the authors of the CL extensions THINK we want...it just previews the images. |

Open them all, then go read them. Having said that, I *usually* want to view the new tab straight away, and I'm happy that that's what Firefox does. I just have to remember that Firefox does it one way and Chrome and Safari do it the other way, and the other option is available by adding the Shift key. -- Mike Barnes Cheshire, England |
