Network adapters for printer

I was wondering it the network adapters that attach to the printer and allow
printer access from other computers on the home network without going through
a server computer work good?

You can buy a printer that has a LAN card build in. This
way you can give it an ip address and connect it straight
to a router.

As with all things it depends on the device, the manufacturer and the
quality of the device. Some brands and models are good, others are horrid.

I personally recommend HP JetDirect devices - they are more expensive than
many of the bargain brands but in my experience they just work.

I haven't tried network adapters that connect directly to printers.

I've tested a few print servers, which connect to the network via
Ethernet and to the printers via a parallel or USB port. It can be
difficult or impossible to network a Windows-only printer -- one that
uses the driver program on the Windows computer for some of its print
processing. Printers that rely on bi-directional communication with
the computer can be troublesome, too.

Good candidates for networking through a print server are ones like
the old HP parallel port laser printers.

printer is a Windows only type or universal.
