Default change video format

I have some films on my hard drive which i have put onto dvd discs.when i
play them on my stand alone dvd/vhs combo(samsung) they play in wide screen
format, which means there is a broad black line on top and bottom of
screen.is there a way i can re-write these films to disc so that they play
in full screen format. i altered the format using WinAVI Video converter to
dvd format then wrote them to disc using Nero. I have tried the viewing
format on samsung where the choices are;4;3 letter box,4;3 pan-scan and 16;9
wide.all to no avail.i am running xp pro, fully updated tia alan

You should be able to change the format on the TV as well..... try 'zoom
mode'.
