unable to capture from DV

Hi

I am trying to capture video footage from my JVC DV camcorder. The editing
program is capable of contoling the camcordervia the PC but i dont get images
/ audio on my PC. My PC has XP and all the updates. It works fine on my
Laptop but the laptop is way to under powered for the editing side.

Any suggestions ?

And you are connecting the camcorder to the PC via firewire? Are you using
Windows Movie Maker?

Then before you tear all your hair out, go get a PCI firewire card and
cable. Honestly, USB is not the way to go. You can't capture digitally
through it, only analog and it's never as fast as firewire. Spending $15 or
so to get the PCI card is worth its weight in gold.

I am having the same problem, unable to capture. I have a firewire card and i
am connected via a DV cable to my JVC digital Movie camera. Any other
recommendations?

It might not be exactly the same problem.... so let's go further with this
one, when you connect the camcorder to the PC with the firewire cable, is
the camcorder powered by the A/C cable and turned on and in VCR mode? Do
you hear the connection 'ding' noise?

The camcorder is powered by the AC cable and turned on. Per JVC instructions
it must be in "memory" mode verses "video" and on "play" verses "record". I
know the PC "sees" the camera, because if i turn the camera to "off" it says
the connection is broken.

When i start capture manually - did this because on auto it did/could not
rewind the tape, so i did that myself - MS Movie Maker says it can not see
the came (dialogue box comes up), all i see is the icom (page with upper
right end turned down) and an arrow pointing up on both my LCD screen and the
frame in MS MM. The wierd thing is when i click on the dialogue box , the
capture process seems to work - the time and disk space increments, but the
film does not move forward and nothing is viewable when I play back what was
supposedly written.

I have XP professional and MS MM v5.1 SP2 (or Windows version 2.1.4026.. can
not tell which is the right version number to read)

What do you think of this - I was asking a guy in the office and he said that
he had problems connecting and his comment was that with Dell laptops - which
is what i have - the PCMCIA card needs to be TI compatible. The Trendware
TFW-H2PC card i have - he looked it up - he said is not TI compatible.
