updates
I've just "legalised" my XP on a computer I bought. Windows automatic update
says that there are a number of updates needed (about 80) most of these seem to be already on the machine (Belarc). Windows will download all the updates but not install them. The cut-off point seems to be updates past 925486. Everytime I turn on windows wants to download all these updates but can't install them. Help? |

Help? Search and Search before asking... Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 Can't figure that out? Get Dial-a-Fix: http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix Use its options to fix: - Windows Installer - Windows Update - All the Registration Center options. Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2" Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution". Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed. - Download/Install Windows Update v3. http://download.windowsupdate.com/Wi...gent30-x86.exe (You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce" right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.) - Download/Install the 927891 patch. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A - Reboot. - Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates. - Come back and let us know how things went! -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

From the sounds of it - they either did a clean installation or a repair installation: - Clean... http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Repair... The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall! http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Link...46&clcid=0x409 Its probably better - all around - to perform a clean installation of Windows XP and all applications after backing upii your data for the simple fact that you know you have something 'not legitimate' on the machine now. You don't know with 100% certainty what might have been changed in that copy of the Windows XP that the installation was done with - but you do know that it was possibly modified. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |
