publisher 2007 with xp os and xerox phaser 8560 color laser stack

I have been using word to do mail merges with up to 3000 records or so with
no trouble. I would like to switch to publisher because of the ease and
flexibility of use with graphics and artwork. When I try to do the mail
merge and then print (either in one document or individually) I get a stack
error. (offending command: timeout: stack). The document is only about 400kb
in size but does have a good bit of word art and graphics in it and about 8
merge fields from access. No matter what I have tried it doesn't seem to
help. I hardly ever received this error with word.
