Default System Restore won't enable

A couple of weeks ago I got an "upgrade" notice from Norton which prompted
me

to do so before my subscription ran out (early next year). I did it and the

installation took forever, and the computer immediately started acting
buggy. I got

Symantec support on the horn and they basically said there was no virus on
the

PC. The next week I upgraded Firefox to version 3 and got even more
screwiness,

such as weird fonts on certain sites (or portions thereof). I tried to
uninstall and go

back to V.2, but it wouldn't work at all. So I went back to 3.

Logically, I went to do a System Restore. A popup said "System Restore has
been

turned off. Do you want to turn on System Restore now?" I clicked Yes and
went to

MyComputer Properties. The "Turn off System Restore on all drives" was
checked.

When I unchecked it and hit Apply, this weird popup appeared: "System
Restore

encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives.
Please restart your machine and try again." Well, I restarted and tried
again.

Same sequence. Again: the same.

In addition, I seem to be missing several fonts I'm sure I had before, such
as

Helvetica. I wonder if this might account for the weird web pages.

At any rate, I really, REALLY want to restore my System Restore!

I'm running an XP Home Ed., Service Pack 2; AMD Athlon XP 3200+ on an HP

Pavilion a520n w/ 512 RAM. Thank you in advance.

Malicious software such as viruses or spyware could be installed on your
computer.

If you are 100% certain that your computer is free from any form of
malware I suggest you show your computer to a professional technician.

Yech. I was hoping for something a little more... controllable. Hmm. Well,
I'll let you know how it goes. It's worth mentioning that I'd also run
Spybot and AdAware to deal with this, and the only thing Spybot found is an
entry for Windows Security Center. In fact, this entry comes up every time I
run Spybot (and I tell it to fix it).

Thanks,

Larry J.
