Default USB Port Issue- Win XP SP3

Hi:

Helping a friend troubleshoot his desktop Compaq Presario. His 2 USB ports
are not '"working". In Device Manager, the USB Hubs are listed and enabled,
and I unchecked the power management option to conserve power. When I put a 2
GB memory stick in either port, the stick's LED lights glow red, but neither
port shows up in Explorer or under My Computer as an active drive. The stick
is not available to use. I plugged a 1.1 and a 2.0 USB printer cable in
either port and no "ping" is heard and no "New Hardware Found" is displayed.
I uninstalled the Hubs in Device Manager in Safe Mode, and then installed a
fresh copy of USB.inf in the Windows folder. Rebooted. The ports still don't
"work". Is there anything in the registry that needs cleaning/uninstalling? I
understand there are a myriad of issues that could explain this situation,
but I figure if the 2GB memory stick has lit LED lights, at least power is
going to the ports. I am at a loss for where else to troubleshoot why the USB
ports are not working.

Thank you.

What happen in Device manager if you select the Scan for newly hardware,
does it pick up any of the USB devices attached to the machine?

Did you try to download updates for the USB from Compaq Presario website?

Hi Nass:

Thank you for replying. No, Scan for New Hardware returns "No hardware
found". I will check the Compaq Website for any USB download updates.
