Default My Network Places and lost targets

I'm having trouble finding a KB article to help with this
one:

In My Network Places, a Network Place may take you
straight to a network share. Or it may take you to a
window with a "target" in it that you have to double-click
to get to the network share.

Question 1: Why do some go straight to the share and
others go to "targets"?

Question 2: And why do active network shares sometimes
come up with bad "targets"?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks
