MS Fax Console trouble
Have not used the fax in my Gateway laptop since I bought it a year ago.
Today I attempted to do so, without much luck. I installed the Microsoft Fax Console, but it still doesn't respond to incoming faxes from a good line, nor can it send faxes. Within the Fax Console, When I click File - Send a Fax… I get the message “The fax printer cannot be accessed. Make sure it is setup properly.” If I then go to Tools – Fax Printer Configuration I get the message Printer Properties: “The ‘Microsoft Shared Fax Driver’ printer driver is not installed on this computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you install the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now? Of course I click yes, and the Add Printer Driver Wizard opens up. Unfortunately, I then must select the manufacturer, and neither Microsoft nor Motorola (the modem manufacturer) are listed. Under Tools – Fax Properties, there is simply the name of the device “Fax”, Model: Microsoft Shared Fax Driver. Sharing tab: Not supported for this type of printer. Printing Preferences button: Operation could not be completed. However, the modem has no trouble dialing out to access the internet (or at least to my cell phone). |

Verify that your modem is an analog fax modem on the Windows XP HCL. If so
state how you configured it for XP Fax. So if the modem is not found on the list http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Pro...&cid=707&f=64d it won't work with the Fax Console? |

You may have security data base corruption as documented he
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/ You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP You can either: 1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes listed in Knowledge Base articles. 2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB article to recover from security database corruption: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00270202 HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software I can report that the Esentutl utility has corrected the problem in a number of cases, HOWEVER, note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the utility and would prefer you try the hotfix.
