1- Is that the complete text of the message? For example, does the
message go on to say this: "This may be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file." [Always post the complete, exact text of error messages.] 2- Can you run Windows defragmenter from the command line? (I do not believe Windows defragmenter will defragment an external hard disk. For that you need third-party software.) --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est vince wrote: Hi too all: When I attempt to defragment my C; or EX HD I get this message: MMC cannot open the file C:\windows\system32\dfrg.msc Can anyone shed some light on what I need to do. I used to right click on my c: & ex hd. icons in my computer & proceed to tools then defrag/ and or check for errors. Always worked fine until today. I was able to defrag manually in Run then type in dfragc: & defragf:. |

This may also be because you don't have sufficient access rights to the file. |

"Gerry" wrote: Vince 291 -Restore Defrag Snap-In http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm -- Gerry: Thanks for the help. I tried your suggestion & providing I did the loading procedure correctly, it didn't help at all. I'm not, however, sure I installed it correctly. Are you sure it is #291 & not 280? Anyhow I rt. click on #291 & "saved link as" to my C: drive. It then came up in "Downloads". Then I click on "Open & "Open executible file' opens w/ all the virus cobble-dee-gook. From there I'm scared $hitle$$ on what to do further. HELP! Thanx again. Vince Hope this helps. If you have Windows XP Professional you can check your permissions for
the executable from the security tab. (Do this from an Administrator account.) If you have XP Home you'll need to be in Safe Mode to see the Security tab. --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est vince wrote: "Leonard Grey" wrote: 1- Is that the complete text of the message? Can't defrag C: or EX HD
I am having the exact same problem with the same message all the way down to
not having access rights. I have been using it on this computer for a year and a half and the only thing I can think of is that I had downloaded the SP3 and had so much trouble with it that I uninstalled it. This is the first time I had tried to use the defragmenter since then and wonder if there is a connection. Linda:
Deja vu! I had trouble with my computer 'after' downloading SP3. It would take several minutes to open one program (like 12-15 min.), and sometimes the program wouldn't open at all! When I used 'Ctrl' + 'Alt' + 'Del', there would be nothing listed in the dialog box because there was no program running. I then uninstalled SP3 and my computer seemed fine until I clicked on 'start', 'accessories', 'system tools', then 'defragmenter'. I got the same exact message as Vince. I am sure it was because of the uninstall of SP3! Is there a fix anywhere out there? Hello,
I am having the same problem. I tried this and it did not work.. I save it and click on it...and reboot but still the same problem.. Is there another solution when you can't do the defrag..
