repairing files

Well I messed up the System file from \windows\system32\config. Oh well
everything's fine now. But when I turned on windows it gave me the error to
fix this press 'r' [on the repair disk] of course. I just took the little
bit of time it took to re-install everything. The system needed it anyway.

But to my point how do you use the repair disk to repair an individual
file. Are there files somewhere in cabinet files ? I'm familiar with fixmbr,
bootcfg and the bootsector repair tool but how do you repair an individual
file like ntldr and ntdetect?

chkdsk /r


does not "fix" files per se

what it does is correct logical errors on the drive.

You may end up with unrecoverable file fragments which end up as .chk files.

in some cases and expert could splice together file frgments
and perform a data recovery...


Now...before you go and and continue to use your system
you should investigate why it was you lost your "config"

I'd at least run a RAM test
and harddrive diagnostic.
Also check the harddrive for overheating

The main MS tool for this purpose is SFC.EXE = System
File Compare. Several mavens point out these essentials
to boot XP can in case of need be duplicated on a floppy.
