Where is XPh PORT DATA kept ? - can't Delete Ports
I had a mad spree setting up network share printers from
one of my XP systems to my W98SE/ME systems and that seemed to work. When sanity kicked in and I bought a network printserver, I decided to tidy every cross-link; this worked fine on 98SE/ME systems but not so on my XPhome PC. The ports are all listed (Printserver properties from right-click in explorer - how obscure is that!) in the form \\PCNAME\PRINTERID (some but not all contain space characters in the printerid field). I have 8 of these guys to lose. Independently of the other PCs being on-line (**hmm but those printers are no longer shared**), I try the Delete Port command and it seems to be very poorly implemented as it gives up when (maybe?) it finds inconsistencies: Hopefully, I click "Yes" to pop-up #1 which says: "Deleting this port will remove it from the system. ... Are you sure you want to delete \\PCNAME\PRINTERID ?" ....but pop-up #2 with a wicked laugh then says: "Selected port cannot be deleted. Operation could not be deleted" I scanned my filesystem and registry but cannot find clear-text versions of any of the components of the portnames. I can add and delete any *new* printer port I can think of. My system ain't broke ... but it sure is irritatingly messy to not be able to tidy this up. p.s. yes I found where the ports are held in the registry and these names aren't visibly there. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\PrinterPorts ....and a M$oft article on fixing a similar problem using that entry by adding in the entry to "re-create" the missing entry before trying to delete it. That didn't work either [** will re-try this with logout before trying delete port again.] |
