Default generic/text only printer and port FILE:

I am trying to install a generic/text only printer on my
system (Win XP Home, pentium 4). The printer installs
correctly, but the assignment to the port called FILE:
fails. When I click on the Configure button a message box
pops up indicating that this port was installed by
fax/voice messaging software I used for a few days and
then uninstalled (I am now using the Win XP fax console).
The old program did not completely uninstall and I had to
manually hack the registry. However, the port in question
(in fact there are *two* identical ports on my system)
remains in the iron grip of the now-defunct software and
I cannot change it or delete it (the fax software has
mapped it to com 2 where my modem resides). Consequently
the print to text file does not an cannot work. I would
appreciate any help. Thanks.

Instead of printing to FILE: port, try creating a new port
AddPort-LocalPort-c:\tty.prn

Thanks for the quick response. I'll give this a try in
the morning (it's quite late here now) and report back.

Of course it worked perfectly. Thanks again for your
help. After a couple of days trying to install a new port
and meeting with the cryptic message: "Not a valid port
name" after every guess/attempt, I realize I should have
come here first.
