File sharing Ok, Web access Not
Advice please.
XP Home machine connected to internet via ethernet to cable modem -works fine. Connected XP home machine to laptop running Win98 via a second ethernet adapter. File sharing works now - a bit of a struggle. Web access from XP Home is fine. When I try to access the Web from the Win98 machine - no joy. First, should this work? Second, if it should can you point me towards some trouble-shooting tips. I have Zone Alarms on the XP Home machine which I turn- off when networking between machines. I have tried to uninstall ZA completely but it refuses to do so. Thanks Terry |

Hi Thanks for the reply.
The IP addresses are different. The connection to the ISP has one of its addresses 81.xxx, the connection to the laptop has an ip address starting 169.254. All ip address are automatically assigned even the DNS addresses. I 'll look at the help page you reference. -----Original Message----- I have a similar (but not the same) setup. Go to Network Connections, you should see two connection icons, one for the LAN card connected to the cable modem, one for the LAN card connected to the 98SE machine. Please tell me if the IP addresses of the two connections are different or same? Is it DHCP assigned or manually assigned? At the same time, please read ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) from Help . |
