Default msconfig-startup

When I went to msconfig-startup,I found one item,
that had no name in the Startup or Command collum,
just this under the Location collum:
"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Window\CurrentVersion\Run"
I unchecked it,and all seems to be running,
but what is it? Thanks for any info.

Default msconfig-startup

Apparently, if there is no path, or maybe an incorrect path, in Value Data,
the item shows up blank in msconfig | Startup. Also if Default under Data
is blank (nothing there at all) instead of (value not set).

Start | Run | Type: regedit | OK |
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

What do you see in the right hand pane?
Do you see an entry with blank (nothing there at all) in the Data column?

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Hi Wes,
when I go to Start | Run | Type: regedit | OK |
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersi

on\Run
I find "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe"

and that is in the Start Up line up too,but the other one
doesn't even start with "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\" it just
starts with"SOFTWARE" so I can't even look in the Registry
to find it..So I assume it is nothing, since nothing has
happened after I unchecked it.
Thanks either way for your input.

Thanks Wes,
I understand what you are getting at,and I can not take a
pic of what I'm trying to show you,all I'm saying,and I'm
not sure if I'm saying this right, every starting item in
the system configuration utility ,has an abbreviation, and
a path to follow, except the last one,
"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run " , I can
look under all of those places you mentioned,
but I still wouldn't know what to look for since
this last one doesn't have a startup item abreviation.
Do you see what I mean ?
Thanks for all your help.

Default msconfig-startup

I think I see what you mean. It sounds like it may be a Startup orphan.
[[An orphan is a startup item that has a non-existent target file. They
primarily occur because you've disabled a startup and then, at a later date,
uninstalled the program that uses it. The uninstaller won't know about the
disabled startup so it gets left behind. And if the uninstaller deletes the
target file then the startup becomes an orphan. Where an orphan is also
enabled you *may* see missing file reports at startup.]]

"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run " would be one of the
following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
