Default Network basics

Hi all!

I don´t know if this is the right group for this matter - BUT...

I must learn how to maintain my LAN. After instaling a new computer (Amilo
below with divergent OS) thera are problems with networkperformance;

Local area network (peer to peer)
One networkadapter (wired to a switch) in each computer
Computer IP Gateway OS Note
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------
PB 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 W2K Client
AMD 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 W2K Connect the LAN to
Internet (ISDN)
Fujitsu 192.168.0.3 192.168.0.1 W2K Client
Amilo 192.168.0.4 192.168.0.1 XP Client
Compaq 192.168.0.5 192.168.0.1 W98 Client
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

Are the parameters above the correct ones?

Are there additional parameters I have to take in consideration?

Best regards

Christina

Hi Christina. From your post, I assume you are using Windows Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) and the AMD machine is the gateway. It all
looks right to me, but IMO for that many computers you would have far
better results if you replace the switch with a router. The router acts
as the gateway machine and normally assigns internal IP addresses. You
would then uninstall/disable ICS on your computers. Someone who is an
expert with ICS (I am not) may have more information for you.

Hi Malke!

"(ICS) and the AMD machine is the gateway" - Can you explain this please.
How can I see if this is the present circumstances. I´m novis about this.
The network has worded just fine until my new computer (Amilo) arriwed.

All computer can see each other but it can takes 30 sec until browsing a
hardisk starts. Rather often diffetent programs reports that a computer is
not a available - probably bacause of the 30s-delay

Best regards

Christina

The gateway means the computer or device (like a router) that gets the
outside IP address from the Internet Service Provider (ISP). I'm going
to give you some links to help. First go through MVP Hans-Georg
Michna's network troubleshooter to narrow down the problem. Then look
at MVP Steve Winograd's site (bcmaven) because he has a lot of
information about setting up ICS.
