Default Can't boot XP Pro SP2

After a session of some rather cavalier registry editing my IBM ThinkPad T22
won't boot XP Pro. It gets as far as the blue boot screen and
"Checking...settings...", but will go no further. I cannot get any further
along in Safe Mode. I did not backup the registry. I have no installation CD.
When I try to boot from an XP Home installation CD, it does not recognize it.
When I try to boot from the SP2 CD, it stops at the same blue screen and
message above. It will not load "Last known good configuration." When I try
to use an XP startup disk made on another computer, it will boot to the
command prompt, but does not recognize C:.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received, successful or not. Thanks!

Until you find your Windows XP Pro CD, your PC will remain
in the current state of disrepair.
