This may seem like a silly question, but the MS Crypto Services depend on
RPC...have you checked to make sure the RPC Service is running? "BDH" wrote: Windows XP Home, SP2 on Compaq 2ghz, 512mb Ram. Get the error when try to start.. Yes, RPC is running,
Error Reporting and Cryptographic are set to Automatic, but are not running and won't start manually. "Barry" wrote in message ... Hi BDH,
Have you tried: http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html It worked for me. All the best! Cryptographic Services won't start
I am now having the same problem when trying install SP2 onto a friends
computer.I have tried everything I can find suggested on the net but without success. In the Services window, Cryptographic Services (CS) has no status EG: nothing written where you would expect to read Stopped or Running. It has been set to Automatic. I have tried re-registering dll's, I have tried renaming the catroot file, I have tried starting it in MS-DOS, I have tried running the batch file "fixdb" but it's as though CS does'nt exist!. I have done SFC's in Windows and MS-DOS but still nothing. The error message in MS-DOS reads "Thee service is starting, The service could not be started, A system error has occurred, System error 127 has occurred, The specified procedure could not be found". When trying to install SP2 it always fails with "Service Pack2 Setup Error. Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the CS is running on this computer". Am I now looking at a system repair from the installation disc? Any advice would be welcome as I would love to have sorted for Christmas. Thanks. --- "I am not afraid of dying - I just don''t want to be around when it happens" "M H Anas" wrote: Hi BDH, Have you tried: http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html It worked for me. Cryptographic Services won't start
OK had the same problems and found this fix from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838428 To resolve this behavior, follow these steps. Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows 1. Restart your computer by using the Safe Mode startup option. To do this, follow these steps: a. Restart your computer, and when the Boot menu appears, press F8. b. Under Windows Advanced Options Menu, select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER. c. When the Boot menu appears again with the words "Safe Mode" displayed at the bottom of the menu, select the operating system that you want to start, and then press ENTER. 2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. 3. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardwa re Profiles\Current\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROO T\LEGACY_RPCSS 4. On the File menu, click Export. 5. In the File name box, type a name for the registry file. 6. In the Save in list, click the location where you want to save the registry file, and then click Save. 7. Right-click LEGACY_RPCSS, click Delete, and in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box, click Yes. Note Do not delete any one of the following subkeys that may be found under the ROOT subkey: o MS_L2TPMINIPORT o MS_NDISWANIP o MS_PPPOEMINIPORT o MS_PPTPMINIPORT o MS_PSCHEDMP o MS_PTIMINIPORT 8. Exit Registry Editor. 9. Restart your computer by using the Restart Windows Normally startup option. Back to the top Seems the problem was being casued by the RPC not being assigned to the current hardware profile, so the cryptographic services would not start. Once the above was done and the PC was started things started working the way they should. The machine had just been infected by one of the bebo viruses going around. Hope this helps someone. -- docstone ------------------------------------------------------------------------ docstone's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/docstone.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-security/401292.htm http://forums.techarena.in |
