Default Anti Virus Application Error

AntiVir Guard for Windows XP PersonalEdition Classic - (build 11/4/2005).

When i tried updating the virus definition file a day or two ago i got the
following error message:

"avnotify.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x769d6897" referenced memory at "0x7d1d2ec0". The
memory could not be "read". "

Does any one have any idea what this means or is familiar with this error
message could you please give me some advice on how to tackle the problem.

I tried updating the virus definition file today and it worked fine - no
errors.
