Default Windows XP Pro Security Settings

I got a hand-me-down laptop from a friend who got it from her office. I can
log in as administrator, but I can't run any application software at all. I
can't download anything, either. I'm sure it's the security settings, but I
can't manage to find the thing that's gonna unlock the rights. I'm running
XP Pro, SP1 (can't download anything else.) Please help if you can.

The best thing to do with a second-hand laptop - particularly one that
has been on a domain - is to format the drive and reinstall Windows. If
you did not receive the operating system or Restore Disks, then it
wasn't a very nice present because you will need to go buy the
operating system you wish to use. Then format the drive, install
Windows, install drivers and other laptop software from the laptop
mftr.'s website for your specific model laptop, and install programs
from installation media as desired.
