Default MyDVD aspect ratio wrong for captured video

I am new to video editing. I have a Sony HC90 camera and am trying to use
the software I have at hand to capture video, edit it, and then burn DVD's.

I'm able to capture video using MovieMaker, but can't burn DVD's with
MovieMaker as far as I can tell.

I also have Sonic MyDVD 4.5. I was able to import video produced by
MovieMaker and then burn a CD.

It seems that MyDVD has some nice features, like the ablity to create
"chapters" in a video while it is capturing. However, when I capture in
MyDVD, the picture is squished. I can't find a way in MyDVD to change the
settings so it knows the video input is in widescreen mode.

With widescreen so common nowadays, it seems the MyDVD should be able to
support this.

I'm not sure if this is the right newsgroup for this type of question. If
you can recommend a better newsgroup, please let me know.

Movie Maker puts a tag in the saved movie saying it's either standard or
widescreen.... some players and other apps use the tag to display the video
in the right proportions.... but some don't.

MyDVD (at least some versions) go by the actual pixel dimensions rather than
the tag... in which case you have to force it by making the movies of the
pixel dimensions needed.

I am new to video editingas well and have a questoin about widescreen.

I shoot all my movies on my Sony digital 8 camcorder in widescreen (16:9)
format, but when editing in movie maker the image is squished so that
everyone looks incredibly thin - all the picture is there but squished to fit
into the preview pane.

Is this simply because it is a preview and it will revert to a full 16:19
ratio when saved to the computer or burned to a DVD without needing to do
anything else?

I'm interested in the answer to this question as well, but I'm afraid that
I'm such a novice that it doesn't make much sense. Is there something that
is done in more simple terms?

Thanks.

Aspect ratio means width in relationship to height.

So...if you shoot in 16:9 and play the video on a
screen that is 4:3... one of two things must happen...
the video will be displayed with black bars top and
bottom or it will be compressed (distorted, squashed)
but will fill the screen.

And, maybe the following articles
will offer some ideas:
