Uninstalling Windows Messenger 4.7
I'm trying to help a friend to remove Windows Messenger 4.7 from his
computer which is running WinXP Home. I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302089 for guidance, but cannot seem to find instructions that fit the situation. Under "Windows Messenger 4.5 or later on a Home-Edition computer..." it says that "This method prevents programs that use the Messenger APIs from using Windows Messenger. Outlook 2002, Outlook Express 6, and the Remote Assistance feature in Windows XP are examples of programs that use these APIs and that depend on Windows Messenger." That's no help because the owner uses Outlook Express and occasionally Remote Assistance. There are instructions for "Windows Messenger 4.0 on a WinXP-Home Edition-based computer. Will those instructions work on 4,7? The ideal solution here is to prevent Messenger from running at all (if possible) or -- at the very least -- to make impossible (or nearly so) for any third party to use or reinstall Messenger. Are there any other alternatives? Thanks. |
