Default Messenger won't start/install

My computer crashed while updating - it froze during the
shutdown/instillation process. Upon restarting, messenger wouldn't open, so I
uninstalled it and now it won't re-install. The error messages are '2894' and
then '1603' once I agree to close and try again. I also have problems with
other programmes, which claim my 'riched20.dll' is missing/corrupt. I think
this is probably the same problem, can anyone help me?

Thanks a lot.
