Default Stuttering audio and video

Whenever I play audio/video files, offline or online, I get stuttering every
few seconds. I have looked for processes that are hogging the CPU but
haven't been successful. I do see CPU usage going high every so often, but
it doesn't seem to correlate with any particular process. The stuttering
happens regardless of which player I use. I have 640MB of memory and try to
minimize the number of processes running. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a dirty laser. Use a standard CD cleaning kit.... or replace
the drive.
