can't get past the Welcome screen
Hi
I'm trying to login from the Welcome screen and when I click my user, it says its loading my personal values and then it immediately says its saving personal values. I can't get past that Welcome screen. I selected safe mode and the only difference on the screen was the additional Administrator user option. I selected that and got identical results. I don't know what to do. Yesterday my computer started running extremely slowly and when looking at the process and cpu list, file syssvccnt.exe was consistently running at 50% of the CPU. So this morning I added a .tmp to the filename. I rebooted and it seemed to be running a little faster. Then I tried restoring to a date in early October (when I know it was working fine) becaise I thought I might have a virus. I haven't been able to login nor bring it up in safe mode since. I hope somebody out there can help! |

A Google search for "syssvccnt.exe" brought nothing, which is a strong indication that it is probably malware. Since doing a System Restore made things worse, see if you can reverse what you did. 1. Try and start the computer in Last Known Good Configuration. 2. If this gets you in, then start Task Manager and stop syssccnt.exe from running. Update your antivirus and take the machine into Safe Mode and scan for malware. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware Let us know what happens with LKGC before we go any further with this. can't get past the Welcome screen
Malke, Thanks for responding. Yes, the executable was syssvccnt.exe. Its
associated with COX Security Suite. COX is my IP. When my computer was really slow I tried to click on the Security Suite to run spyware or virus check but it wouldn't respond other than an error msg that it was busy. I tried starting in Last Known Good Configuration but it came up to the same Welcome screen. By the way, I had never seen the Welcome screen until this problem happened. Normally it automatically logs in upon startup. Normally it automatically logs in upon startup. It sounds like you've picked up some malware that has affected winlogon and/or has otherwise damaged the startup files. Of course, that's just a guess on my part - the slowness could also be caused by hardware or other factors I can't know about long-distance. Unfortunately, if you can't get into the machine in any way through Windows the only thing to do is try and figure it out from outside of Windows with something like a Bart's PE or ERD Commander. There are just too many factors to be able to untangle it without actually having hands-on the machine. You know your skill level best; if you can use a rescue cd to work outside the operating system then that's the next step. Otherwise you can take the machine to a computer professional (not a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad place) or back up the data if not already done and try a Repair Install. You can back up your data even if you can't get into Windows by using Knoppix (Linux live CD) or a Bart's PE and an external hard drive or USB thumb drive. If the Repair Install doesn't work, test the hardware and if good do a clean install of Windows. Let me know if you need help with any of that. Yea, I checked on a friend's computer and it is spelled with one 'c'. Since
I can't get into my hard drive I was going on my memory ... which isn't the best right now! Sorry! "Gerry" wrote: Are you sure about the spelling? can't get past the Welcome screen
Hey, I finally got into my pc with BartPE. I changed the userint value as
the directions say, and was able to get in. Now it has no internet connection. I'm using my roommate's computer which has internet. Now I guess I'll try to set it up as if it was a new pc with no internet. I just have to remember how that works! Thanks for mentioning BartPE. can't get past the Welcome screen
Hello,
I'm a different user...but with the same problem. I can't even get into Windows because it keeps logging me out immediately. I've tried all the F8 options...safe mode...last known configuration...and to top it all off, I can't find my bleeping Windows XP original CD. Any suggestions ? Thanks.
