Default Problems with RESTORE

I cannot restore the machine to an earlyer time. This happened to me
last year when my Son had put SP2 in the machine. I don't remember
what they told me to do to correct the situation, but whatever it was,
it worked. My son rebuild my machine last month, and there is a new
Windows XP busines in the machine now. I am only guessing, but this
may be the same situation as before.
Can someone please help?
Thank you
Bob K.
