It is now called CCleaner. "Safe" is a relative term. I know what is
safe for me, a professional computer tech, to use but I can't know what
is safe for you to use.

I use CCleaner when I am working on clients' infected computers. I would
not suggest using the registry cleaning part of CCleaner but it is quite
good at removing temporary files, etc.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

So use at your own risk.

Hi Walt:
Keep in mind that Malke has forgotten more things that I will ever
know; also that he has answers where I haven't even thought of the
questions yet.
Having said that, I have used CCleaner for quite some time (perhaps
proving that fools rush in where angels fear to tread), and I just say
"Run Cleaner". I thinks it does wonders keeping the "C" out of my
computer.

BTW Malke, in the version which I use (2.02.527) I don't see anything
where it will clean the registry - am I overlooking something?
I use RegSeeker for that purpose. Seems to do a good job also.

Cheers!

The registry cleaner can be accessed on the left hand side.
If you really must use a reg cleaner I suggest this one

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

It is written by the same guy who made jv16 power tools and if you use the
software section to remove remnant's of uninstalled software you should
stay out of trouble because it does not touch the operating system.
Also here is a free program to "backup" the registry just incase.

I'm inclined to agree with Malke. I too use CCleaner on a regular basis. I
have used the registry cleaner option but have always checked to see exactly
what it is going to delete before actually deleting anything.

I am having "issues" with the Norton. Keeps telling me that my subscription
is "expired" when it isn't. There "tech support (through email) can't figure
it out? What would you recommend to replace it? I also use adaware, spybot,
spywareblaster and Tune Up Utilities. I have rebates on the Norton so would
only be out about 5 bucks.

I agree with SG. Norton is the worst security product on the market.

I also use adaware, spybot,
spywareblaster

Good.

and Tune Up Utilities.

Bad. Products like this are nothing but snake oil, and are more likely
to cause a problem than to fix one.

You run three good anti-spyware programs, so you should be good there.
Get rid of Norton and Tuneup Utilities, and get a good anti-virus
program. There are several good ones. I personally like the freeware
Avast!

You don't mention a Firewall program, but if you're not already
running one, you should do that too.

Regarding CCleaner, yes, it's good, as long as you avoid using its
registry cleaning feature. Registry cleaning isn't needed and is
dangerous.

I have rebates on the Norton so would
only be out about 5 bucks.

I know you didn't ask me, but I use AVG Anti-Virus by Grisoft
www.Grisoft.com

I'm told that AntiVir is better, but I haven't used it.
(I believe it does not check email for viruses - AVG does.)
http://www.free-av.com/

I also use adaware, spybot, and spywareblaster

As I understand it, the latter (Spywareblaster) always runs in the
background.
I make it a habit to update the definition files of all three about
once a week, and then run adaware and spybot.

If you clean out your cookies and MRU's frequently, these programs
hopefully won't find too much.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/mrublaster.html

I'm no expert, and none of the above is scientifically proven, but my
machine stays pretty clean.

Now, if only I could find a way to filter out the spam. Every time I
add filters, those @$!*&* spammers find ways of circumventing them.
Oh, wel . . . . . .

Cheers!

Are you sure it has expired or it 'Will Expire', Norton usually starts
warning you about 30 days in advance.

Thanks to all for all the advice and help.
Yes I am sure that it says it's expired because there is a big red X on the
Norton Icon. When I go and check the subscription it comes back and says it
is not expired and will work again. I think I will look into the Avast
program.
Isn't the Windows Firewall a good enough Firewall? If not, what is
recommended?
