I would go through some of the other options in my tips list.

Don't think that because you *pay* for something it will be any better
than a free option and don't think that the free options being pushed
by people on these newsgroups are *just* because they are free. They
do their job as well if not better than the pay options in the case of
the ones that do get pushed. In the case of AVG and AVAST, etc - the
reason they get listed in my tips as well as McAfee and Norton is that
they do the same job as well or better than the latter two *and* they
end up costing less and using up less of your valuable system resources
to do their job.

BS!! Norton, no way - McAfee yes. Granted, where bloat comes into
play Symantec has the leading edge of it, yet all of the other companies
are not far behind in todays times of the ever intensifying battle
between the protection providers and protection busters. As for
resource usage, everyones mileage varies in system/application
performance depending on their system setup and maintenence routine.

According to reports for 2007 alone at av-comparatives, Norton AV
performed better than Avast, AVG and many other products in both the
On-Demand comparative and Retrospective/Pro Active tests, AVG was
absolutely pitiful in the Retrospective/Pro Active test.

I agree that it all boils down to ones opinion but that doesn't mean I have to
agree with it.

reports, I also read through any documents they may have stating their method of
testing, type of samples used, criteria for vendor inclusion/exclusion, sorting
methods, etc.

I first responded with my opinion to the statement that Avast and AVG do the same
job as well or better than McAfee and NAV.

I didn't provide the sites link, I used the link to go to the site so I could have
a look at the reports myself and then I responded back on what the test reports
stated. That was not my opinion, it was what was reported for each of the tests done
by the developers of that site.

the developers links to on their site

Thanks everyone for all the input, I have to try and absorb all this
information and come up with the correct decision. So much to look at and so
little time to do it. I have to make sure it is easy for my wife as she is
the one that does most of the surfing. I work afternoons and this gives her
something to do while I'm not here (hahaha). I know this is of subject just
thought I would throw it in.
