Win 7 to 10 Questions I am unable to find answers for

Presently using desktop Win 7 Home 64 bit SP-1 plus upgrades and neither Quicken Premium 2014 or 2015 will run producing a Net v4.0.30319 error 1026. Tried to fix by MANY means including uninstall 4.6.1 then reinstall .NET 4.0 and then 4.6.1. QW support has given up and says it is a Windows problem. QW 2014 runs on my Win 10 32 bit laptop without problems. I intend to upgrade the desktop to Win 10 Home (free) and then pay for Pro so I can use Group Policy to control when following upgrades and boots occur. Questions I am unable to find answers for: 1. I used WSUS Offline upgrade from SP-1. Would trying online Convenience Upgrade produce a different result? If try Online should I remove all installed upgrades back to SP-1 first? 2. Will the free upgrade to Home install new .Net framework so Quicken will run? 3. Will subsequent Win 10 Pro purchase install new .Net framework so Quicken will run? If above answers are No's then I will have to do a full re-install after Win 10 upgrade to get "fresh" .Net framework and then reinstall all my programs. I do have a disk image and separate data backups. -- Zaidy036 |

Run the tool provided at this link: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/astebner/2008/10/13/net-framework-setup-verification-tool-users-guide/ I intend to upgrade the desktop to Win 10 Home (free) and then pay for Pro so I can use Group Policy to control when following upgrades and boots occur. Who cares what you do in the future. We only deal with your current problem; SteveGG and Big Bad Bob deals with problems in the future; Questions I am unable to find answers for: 1. I used WSUS Offline upgrade from SP-1. Would trying online Convenience Upgrade produce a different result? If try Online should I remove all installed upgrades back to SP-1 first? No. You just need to stop using third party tools; They create more problems in the hand s of a novice. 2. Will the free upgrade to Home install new .Net framework so Quicken will run? Why not try it your self. Default installation is Home unless your current version of 7, 8 or 8.1 is prof. 3. Will subsequent Win 10 Pro purchase install new .Net framework so Quicken will run? Again try it by using the generic key when installing Windows 10 The key is: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T If above answers are No's then I will have to do a full re-install after Win 10 upgrade to get "fresh" .Net framework and then reinstall all my programs. I do have a disk image and separate data backups. Clean install of 10 always what I recommend to avoid any type of corruption like the one you are currently facing. People keep installing all sorts of third party software without knowing that these create more problems then good and always avoid them unless you are an accomplished Windows user. -- With over 350 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |

If that's your only reason for Pro, why can't you just use the metered connection fix to prevent updates? Works fine on Pro, I can only assume it works on Home... If it doesn't someone with the facts will surely correct me. Send me half of the $199...we both win...;-) Questions I am unable to find answers for: 1. I used WSUS Offline upgrade from SP-1. If that works and MS does not change the Reg during some upgrade you have saved me the Pro upgrade cost. Can always do later if MS changes. My problem is unattended overnight batches where interruption by upgrade/reboots might cause system failures beyond just batch being non-productive, Now just have to find out if an upgrade will allow Quicken to work or I will have to do a fresh install. I guess since no one has responded to my questions about NET Framework I will just have to "bite the bullet" and upgrade and test. I have save a Belarc scan as a list of installed programs. Thanks for the Ethernet/Metered URL. |

I guess since no one has responded to my questions about NET Framework I will just have to "bite the bullet" and upgrade and test. I have save a Belarc scan as a list of installed programs. Thanks for the Ethernet/Metered URL. One version of .NET is installed by default in a Windows OS. According to this, in Windows 10 that would be .NET 4.6, which replaces 4.0 and up. You can also look in "Programs and Features" "turn windows features on and off" For some reason, mine shows 3.5 (includes 2.0, 3.0, 3.5) 4.6 and it really shouldn't, as it implies 4.6 can be removed. Maybe this is intended to solve the problem, where on previous OSes, the "default" version could not be repaired ? ******* For layers other than those, they can be installed separately when you want them. For example, some older programs may use .NET 1.1 , and you can install .NET 1.1 separately just to make such a program happy. As I understand it, a program compiled against ..NET 1.1, is not clever enough to use the 3.5 as a substitute. You can use Aaron Stebner's tools netfx_setupverifier_new to determine what versions of .NET currently exist and are properly installed on your OS. The tool does tests against the various versions, allowing a check that the library is present and exhibits basic functionality. While you can check the Registry to see if a version is present, Aaron's method "proves" the files are actually there. His test isn't a "test bench" as such, and does not check feature completeness (the test code doesn't check that 20,000 subroutines are supported or anything), it's more likely to be a three-line "Hello World" type test :-) In many cases, things like the control panel on your graphics card, will require the 3.5 version to be turned on. If your video card really is "supported" by ATI or NVidia, you may find it a good idea to turn on 3.5 before hand, before installing a driver to replace the Win10 provided driver. Like, installing ATI Crimson driver to replace the Windows one. But remember also, that once ..NET is turned on, mondo-time is wasted applying security updates, which is a heavy heavy tax for a stinking library. Any time .NET is updated, all the assemblies have to be recompiled, which is part of the "wasted time". Paul |

Interesting that on my PC indicated .NET frameworks installed are 1.1 and 4.6.1 BUT "Turn Windows Features on or off" only shows 3.5.1 which is ON. Does that mean a "bad" install or since 4.6.1 is included with Win 7 it cannot be shut off and no selection is necessary? I d/l a new 4.6.1 install and it offered to do a "repair" back to original which I let it and followed by the required reboot but no change in my situation AND Quicken would not run with the same error as previous. |

The Inmtuit thread you refer to is mine trying to get some help BEFORE posting here and as you can see nothing offered except a free Q support. Q support provided a d/l 2015 Premier (I am using 2014) but that also failed with the same error so they blamed MS and gave me a phone number to call. That number was for MyPhoneSupport in India, supposedly an MS affiliate but when I Googled the number found they are suspected of scam and problems if allowed "inside" my PC. I will not allow that and said I would call back if interested in their service. My Win 10 Home laptop includes 4.6.1 in the OS while the 4.6.1 in Win 7 is an add-on that can be removed and reinstalled. The laptop Win Features On/Off shows NET 3.5 (including 2.0 and 3.0) and 4.6.1 with WCF Services marked "on" with TCP Port Sharing. Laptop has IE Version 11.420.10586.0 Update Version 114.0.32 (KB3160005) Product ID 00150-00003-AA459 Desktop has IE Version 11 Only readable info is (KB3160005) remainder is yellow print on white. |

I don't know what Quicken uses for a display. Notice how the stack trace, Quicken seems to be dying, just as it is attempting to display the Quicken splash screen. The thread has no resolution, and the individual must have gone to support for help. I can see in a second thread, that qlc.intuit.com is a waste of time as a technical forum. I can see a common thread to the failures, but no "FAQ" comes up in a search at all, to explain this failure. Surely more people suffer from this. At this point, bashing .NET probably isn't going to help. And in the Event Viewer info above, there is no mention of what the COM might have been trying to do. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component_Object_Model "It is used to enable inter-process communication" HTH, Paul Thanks for your further investigation. If Quicken needs 4.0 or later, maybe you could just install 4.0 ? And not install 4.6.1 right away. I don't really think that's the issue though. In the "Hail Mary" category of workaround, you could click the Quicken executable and select "Run as Administrator", but again, I really don't think that elevating the boss process, guarantees some permission issue will be solved. It could even be an AV product preventing some COM operation, for all I know. Paul |
