Default Sharing files in XP

I cannot share files off of my desktop from my wireless laptop. Here are the
details:

I'm treating the desktop as a server w/printer attached. Both machines are
XP Pro sp3. Both have Print & File Sharing enabled & Simple Sharing turned
off. The laptop can print to the shared printer. No 3rd party firewall s/w,
Windows firewall disabled on both computers. When I try to connect to the
shared files (on the desktop) I get that //comp/shared is not accessible...
No permissions, network path not found error.
The problem occurs whether the laptop connects either wirelessly or wired to
the router (Netgear WGR614v6). Both computers have a login in common & the
same workgroup (though I'm hoping that this can be changed also for work
reasons)

The simple solution is creating the same username and password on both
computer. This search result may help.
Access issues
"computername is not accessible. No permission to access the
resources" ... Message: "....is not accessible. You may not have permission
to use this network ...

Did that as noted in prior post both comps have login in common (both have admin rights also)
