I'm trying to completely remove a user profile.

If all else fails, download a Linux live CD ISO. I suggest Linux 17 mint Cinnamon. There are other Linux boot CD's.
Linux does not care about names and lengths and will read the windows partition. LM 17 Cinnamon is much like windows
for those that don't know. There is a similar 'folder' on the taskbar to launch the explorer and you'll see your
windows on the left tree and can click on it and open it. You could trash the entire profile in one click there. Do
make sure you "delete" and not "move to trash" if that's an option.

Interesting.

It says here, there is a Delete Files option when working
on the account. But no picture of the dialog box.

There has been a bug in Windows for a long time.
I tested this one day, using Perl to generate too-long
file names.

It turns out, in my testing, there is exactly one file name
length, that File Explorer refuses to let you do stuff.

If, on the other hand, you use any other program to
work with the file system, this limitation is not present.
For that particular length of file name, you can "rename".

One thread I found, suggested using 7-ZIP as a "file manager"
and do the rename of the errant thing in there.

And a thread here, mentions a particular combination of
Robocopy options, which will purge a too-long file name.

http://www.bryantwebconsulting.com/b...Deleting-Files

"robocopy C:\EMPTY_DIRECTORY
C:\DIRECTORY_WITH_SUB_OR_FILE_TOO_LONG\...\
/PURGE /W:1 /R:1 /V /S

results in a false copy but that clean up all..."

The first directory in that command, is an empty folder.
You are asking Robocopy to copy an empty folder to the destination
folder (the one you want removed). The /PURGE option
cements the operation. Purge delete files that no longer
exist in the source (and since the source is empty, the
entire destination folder is cleared).

You have to make an empty folder ("EMPTY_DIRECTORY"),
before you issue that command. You can remove the
empty folder later if you wish.

Since Robocopy is not "File Explorer", it won't have
that problem with a long file name. Using just about
any tool except Robocopy, would get you around this.
I used ActiveState Perl, to make long filenames and
shorten them again later. Just for testing of this
bug.

Be careful with Robocopy - always double check your
spelling. And *never never* copy and paste a Robocopy
command from one window to another (trust me on this).
If the copy/paste fouls up, and the partition letters
in the command happen to be wrong, you can lose a
gigabyte of tiles in the time it takes to snap your
fingers.

There is a tool some spammers advertise, but it is
a licensed tool and won't work without a key.

I use robocopy in a batch file for updating onto a thumb drive select folder.
I never thought of it to erase something but yes it would if you transferred an empty folder to a full folder.

robocopy C:\empty C:\user\defunct /MIR

I myself use /MIR to duplicate folders, it deletes and adds and updates, so if empty has no files, defunct will to after
it's done. Much easier than booting a linux cd.

Follow-up:

It was not the filename that was too long; it was the PATHname!

I renamed "winstore_cw5n1h2txyewy" to "winstore" and was able to delete
those files.
