Default Help. CD/DVD drive not found after using most recent Windows Update

I used Windows Update today. Afterwards, I wanted to play a game that
uses the CD/DVD. Windows could not find the CD/DVD Rom device.

Windows 64-bit Pro 8.1. I used my CD/DVD without problem as recently
as yesterday.

According to Device Manager, the driver for it is current and up to
date. The device shows up underneath the CD/DVD Rom category in Device
Manager. I can physically open and close the drive itself. I have
just unistalled and then re-installed the driver using Device Manager,
shutting down my pc and restarting at each stage. It did not fix my
problem.

Device Manager had the following info, which unfortunately, doesn't
mean anything to me:
Driver Name: cdrom.inf
Class Guid: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Service: cdrom
Lower Filters:
Upper Filters:
Problem: 0x13
Status: 0x0

Using Google for the problem number gave some hits dating back to 2006,
but the answers didn't make sense to me, they seemed to just say they
got it working, but not HOW they got it working.

My troubleshooting was on the premise that I could fix it by deleting
and re-installing the driver. That did not work. What next?

Has anyone run into this problem in the last few days?
Is it associated with the current Windows Update release?

I'm thinking that I will have to try a hit or miss and uninstall the
most recent updates to see if that fixes my problem, but this is
uncharted territory for me.

Thanks.

Open "administrative tools" - computer management - disk management. Is
the drive listed there? If it's listed, assign it a drive letter.

If the problem was related to UpperFilter (installed by
a third-party program), then the Fixit here might work.
The idea is, it deletes the Upperfilter, in the hope the
drive will be detected and work again.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060

But your report above, shows no UpperFilter is present,
so that isn't it.

*******

The other (remote) possibility, is you had a TDSS Rootkit
present on the computer, before the Patch Tuesday run,
Microsoft patched atapi.sys, and you experience symptoms
that other users do not see. If you use a tool like
"TDSSKiller", the issue with testing with that, is the
danger of it not being maintained on a daily basis by
the author, and the machine gets bricked. The people
using TDSS, would keep working on it, and improving it,
while the removal people get tired of chasing them after
a while.

So before using TDSSKiller, do a backup.

*******

You also have the option of using System Restore to undo
the damage, and take you back to a date before you ran
Windows Update.

You can also uninstall the Windows Updates one at a time,
until the optical drive works.

No matter what you decide to do, it'll be a lot of work.

In the case of a rootkit, looking in Device Manager
won't help you at all. A rootkit can hide what it has
done, and a rootkit scanner is the tool to shine some
light on the issue. But what rootkit scanner do you
trust, to be up-to-date ?

Try reseating the drive cables at both ends, especially if this is a
SATA CD/DVD.

If that does nothing and this is a SATA drive, try moving it to another
drive connector on the motherboard and give that a try, that might force
Windows to take a second look at the drive.

Always reboot the computer before starting any troubleshooting.
You would be amazed at what a reboot can fix. :-)

You may download and run malwarebytes

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I have found that it is good at finding and removing problems like this.

I use it in conjuction with McAfee Total Protection, and so far have
not had any problems with malware, or viruses

He did. He was explaining how he was trying to get a CD-based game to play.

To be honest, I had a similar problem when I was ripping my CD
collection to WMA Pro not too long ago. However, it had a lot to do with
the fact that I expected the CD in the drive to be recognized by the OS
within seconds of it being inserted and didn't allow the system to load
and detect the contents of the CD. Once I started being patient, it
started consistently reading my media.

I'm curious as to whether he's doing the same thing in freaking out,
within 5 seconds, because Windows hasn't loaded his game CD.

May well go that route. The only software I've installed in the past
month (early May I think) was for a digital TV tuner on a USB stick.
The software was written by ArcSoft, and came on the manufacturer's
Install DVD.

I haven't opened up to tinker with my pc for some time, so it could be
SATA; I don't remember at the moment. Sounds worth trying.

No, it is not possible; I did. If nothing else, the Windows Update
window screen is good about reminding you to do so :-)

Unless you mean going the whole nine yards by turning off the power
using the switch for the psu. As I said, my troubleshooting effort
using Device Manager included shutting down and restarting after each
change I made in Device Manager - about three times in total IIRC.

I don't believe so. I have autorun disabled on my pc. Instead I click
on the game's executable on my HD. Normally, it checks the CD to
confirm that the game's CD is present and then loads the game from the
HD installation, not from the CD-ROM.

Instead of what I'm used to it doing, I now get a pop-up windwo stating
that "CD-ROM drive not found" with the additional message "unable to
find a CD-ROM/DVD drive on this computer". Although there may be other
reasons, I still think it was something to do with the Windows Update
that I did earlier today; it is just too coincidental. I have not
installed any software since early May.

Interesting thought. My game certainly might fall under that category
because I bought the game around 2009 or so, but from Bethesda
Softworks, not Ubisoft. However, I've had many occasions over the
years where I've had to uninstall it and re-install it as I played
around with it and/or upgraded hard drives and my OX. If that were an
issue, it does seem as if it would have manifested itself years ago
rather than now immediately or soon enough after going ahead with the
Windows Update.

I think what I'll first do, if Microsoft doesn't issue a fix soon, is
peel back the updates I did today. I looked and IIRC there were a
total of six excluding Microsoft's Windows Defender (the virus
definitions things).
