| You must have seen
| the GUI: Giant buttons they call "tiles", with
| a monotone background. It's in all the ads
| for MS tablets and phones.
|
| Actually, I haven't seen the ads since I don't look for them.
|
| I did see the big colorful squares in Windows 8.1 when I bought that
| laptop for my kid two years ago, and hated it like I hated Unity.
|
| The Dell people helped us get rid of most of the obnoxity.

Interesting development in terms on Metro
on Windows that I just came across:

http://blogs.skype.com/2015/06/11/a-...e-for-your-pc/

Microsoft is discontinuing the Metro version
of Skype and producing a Win32 version with
touch capability instead.
Their statement about the fate of Skype on
phones and tablets is vague. It's not clear to me
from their posting what they plan on Metro-
only devices.

(Note for those not familiar with the terminology:
When Microsofties say "modern" they mean Metro.
I say Metro because "modern", especially uncapitalized
as MS does, really means nothing at all, which
makes it confusing. Metro is clearly TileCity
giant buttons, and all that implies. "Modern" merely
implies something that runs on a computer built in
the past 20-odd years. The Microsofties have actually
avoided using a trade name and are trying to elevate
Metro buttons to the level of a new standard in computer
GUIs by doing that.)

Now, why would you gamble on pi$$ing of a bunch of users? If they do
this, a friend and I will just go back to Yahoo Messenger.

It probably has to do with the fact that nobody bothered to use the
modern version of Skype and preferred the desktop version. If 1% of your
desktop users use the modern interface and 99% use the desktop one,
which of the two will you support?

A perspective I didn't think about for desktops. But I'm wondering
about the fate of the tablet version. I use it to Skype with when on
lunch at work.

I'm sure that they'll continue to support the one available for Windows
Phone which sort of obliges them to support the tablet version since
they are very similar.

Probably, but how many Skype users on not on Windows hardware? :-) If
they think I'll buy a Windows phone or tablet just to use Skype, I've
got a bridge in Phoenix for them. LOL
