Recently I bought a new laptop, which came with Windows 8.1. There
don't seem to be any games on it, not even the ones that came with
Windows 7.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to transfer the Windows 7
games from a Windows 7 laptop to a Windows 8 laptop? (I'm suspecting
the answer is No, since there's no specific installer for them, but I
figure it can't hurt to ask.)

The only game I use is Solitaire and it can be easily transferred: copy
sol.exe and cards.dll from one machine to the other, putting both in the
same folder, make a shortcut to sol.exe.

Other games could be transferred similarly but I don't now the file
dependencies for them. If you transfer and run the exe, it will probably
complain about what it lacks.

My windows 8.1 desktop came with a solitaire and mah jong game. Both
games, as well as many other should be available through the Windows Store.

If you want games for Windows 8.1 about the only way to get them is to
go to the Windows Store. This is not an ideal solutions as many of the
games come packed with advertising. I have downloaded the Klondike
Solitaire Collect. It is a quite nice version with several layouts. The
card backs are the traditional card backs and the cards are of a nice
size. While it comes with advertising, it is easily defeated by turning
off your LAN connection before you start the game.

I am still looking for a good Mahjong game.

Well, I've installed the W7 games in W10, using a W8 method. Not sure
what I used, but I found it by googling.

Might have been something like

I'm not sure how people say they just copy the win7 games to 8 but that never seemed to work, at least originally. The
was once a patcher program out to modify a key spot in the exe files so they thought they could run on a later version
of windows than 7. But it some how got pulled from the internet. I was lucky enough to get it and fixed all my games
to run and have them all windows 8. The link given above is a new solution but I'm sure it's basically the same thing.

I get something like this.

Directory of C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Solitaire

11/21/2014 06:42 PM dir en-US
11/21/2014 06:42 PM 6,214,144 CardGames.dll

I'm embarrassed. I really do know better -- I should have googled
before asking.

Howtogeek has this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/122145/what...solitaire-and-
minesweeper-in-windows-8/

There's a Youtube video with essentially the same information:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg8k6Xcp9Pg

On Windows 7:
1. Copy C:\Windows\System32\CardGames.Dll to a USB stick.
2. Copy C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games to a USB stick.

On Windows 8:
3. Copy the Microsoft Games folder to C:\Program Files.
4. Copy CardGames.dll to the FreeCell, Hearts, Solitaire, and Spider
Solitaire folders under C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games.
5. Patch the games to defeat the version check.
EITHER use the Microsoft Games Patcher" from he
http://www.mediafire.com/download/oa...soft.games.pat
cher.1.2-patch.exe
OR do the hex edit shown in the Howtogeek article. Youtube recommends
the patcher.

That patcher is a tad bit worrisome. Avast doesn't have a problem
with it, but Malwarebytes calls it a PUP. % of (I think 96) tests at
Virus Total had a problem with it, but Howtogeek says it's safe:

"(Important Note: Windows 8?s built-in Windows Defender will flag
this patcher as potentially malicious software. You can safely ignore
this warning. The exact categorization is HackTool:Win32/Patch.P. As
we can see on Microsoft?s malware database, this ?is a generic
detection for a series of hacking tools intended to ?patch? programs
that may be evaluation copies, or unregistered versions with limited
features.? It?s flagged as malware because it?s similar to tools that
are often used by pirates to ?crack? software.)"

I haven't tried these yet, but my inclination is to edit the files
myself rather than use the patcher. I'll report back on my success.

I can't say with 100% certainty that copying from Win 7 works as I don't
have Win 7 but I CAN say with 100% certainty that copying from WinXP does.

Code is code.

Good grief!! Mine has 408 KB...352 for cards.dll and 56 for sol.exe. It
would seem that you have a ton of superfluous bytes.

The answer is *yes*!

You can get the old solitaire and other games back. See
http://www.howtogeek.com/122145/what...-in-windows-8/

Also see http://winaero.com/blog/get-windows-...or-windows-10/
This was written for the new Windows 10, but it also applies to
Windows 8.0/8.1

Yes, but they are very different from, and very much inferior to (in
my opinion), to what came with Windows 7.

I ran the patcher years ago, not sure what patcher it was though. But later I did a diff on the original exe files and
the patched ones. There are only 2-4 bytes that were changed. So MY patcher only changed a small item which makes me
feel good.

A hex editor isn't that hard to work.
hxd is a good one.

Well, that was a bust. The byte sequence in the Howtogeek article
doesn't occur in FreeCell.exe. And the patcher did locate the files,
but it edited only FreeCell.exe, and after the edit FreeCell still
wouldn't run in Windows 8.1.

Howtogeek is usually better than that.
