Unhappy My XP runs scandisk when it boots

My Windows XP runs scandisk and also the free space scan when it boots. Even though I shut down my system properly and my screen shows "power saving mode" after I shut down my pc, the system says " windows must be checked for consistency. it takes almost 10-15 minutes to scan the disks.
I have 80 gb harddisk and 512mb ram and more than 80% of my harddisk is empty.

the system scans only the c:\ and its free space.

whats wrong? please help.
