Slow system restart

I'm running Win7 32-bit with all current updates on a Gateway M6850-FX
notebook. If I shut down, it takes a less than 15 seconds to power off. If I
put it into hibernation, it takes 15-20 seconds to power off. It takes less
than 45 seconds to start up from either of these conditions to full usage.
But if I do a restart, it takes about 3 or 4 minutes to shut down and come
back up. It will go to a black screen with the power light and HDD light on
in about 30 seconds, then stays there for 2-3 minutes, then the POST screen
comes up and everything is normal from there. There is nothing wrong showing
in the event logs. Everything else runs fine- I have a 300GB HDD with 250GB
free, 4GB RAM, and an Intel Core2 Duo T8300 CPU @2.4GHz. It's not that often
that I need to do a reboot; just seems strange that the shutdown part of it
should take more than twice as long as a shut down/power off. I was
wondering if anyone may have an idea or two on what might be causing it.

I'd look at the AV.
My Norton 360 was giving me that on a restart.
Shutdown..fast.
Restart...slow.
Remove 360..restart fast again.
Go figure...I thought Symantic was on the ball again.

Both 7 and Vista exhibit that behavior for me.

MSE is my new AV ... so far so good, speed wise.

Good call! Thanks! That's exactly what it is. If I turn off ZASS, reboot
takes about the same amount of time as a shut down/ restart. Not that it's
any big deal (I'm not pressed for time any more), but I'll probably just do
a shut down and restart whenever a reboot is required.

Most likely something, or multiple things running in the background. Do you
use 3d party anti virus, spyware, and so forth? If so try the free one from
Microsoft. Delete the old stuff before you install the new. Then see what it
does. I have been using it on several PC's for a while now and it seems to
be working great on XP, Vista and Win. 7.

Yeah...I switched everything except WHS to MSE over a month ago and I'm
not looking back.

If it was a big deal, I'd be looking for another solution, and would
consider MSE if I didn't have almost a year of this subscription left. Maybe
after that runs out, I'll reconsider changing or not.

Another thought is that there is a Windows Update waiting in the wings.
That can take a while to do its thing.

However, Update does tell you when it's doing that, so if you see no
messages on shutdown and on restart, I am wrong.

My Norton Internet Security also seems to significantly slow down
shutdown and startup, and I also have nearly a year left on my
subscription. Maybe I can compute how much time NIS will rob me of in
2010. Should I add the time I spend on that computation to the total?
