Gadget stopped working around January 30 ("Cannot connect to service") and hasn't come back since. Gave up messing with it and now use Weather Meter. It's OK but the display can get cluttered if you configure it to show too much data. I may look into other weather gadgets to see if I can find one I like better than Weather Meter. |

Weather Gadget
I have an ASUS Laptop, a Dell laptop and a home-grown high-end
desktop.... All with Win7PremiumSP1 on my home network. The weather gadget still works on the Dell but not the other 2. T2 |

He obviously doesn't know what he's talking about, but at least 25 people indicate that they got their gadgets working again by following the steps in the second reply, the one from "sting251" who starts off with, "I do not typically post on any type of forums". Since my gadgets are still working fine, I'll assume it's good enough to simply make a copy of the files he mentions and store them for the day when the gadgets quit working. -- Char Jackson |

"Cannot connect to the service" is likely a wholly different issue than "cannot connect to server". That would also explain why gadgets still work for some of us and not for others. The server(s) are obviously still operational, but on specific PCs, the *service* is apparently not running. I'm not sure which service I'm referring to. That would be the Windows Location Service. Look for wlsrvc.dll "near" the gadget folder. The only reason I started looking for that, was when I looked in the javascript for the gadget, I could see references to that service. And then I did a file search, to see if anything of a similar name was available. There was no sign of it (no entry) in Services. You're supposed to be able to add it, by adding a "sensor" to Windows 7. For the privacy minded, maybe that normally isn't enabled. But mine is grayed out - I'm not allowed to add any sensor using the specified method. So I can't even add it back. Paul |

All I've been able to find so far deals only with _enabling_ or _disabling_ one or more sensors that are already installed. My Win 7 box has no sensors, so none are enabled, and the weather gadget works fine. The whole 'location services' thing appears to be entirely optional. Like you, I see references in the code, but I don't think any of that is required. I mean, obviously it's not required. -- Char Jackson |

Yes, I just used that method to repair one computer's 'broken' gadget using a copy of a working gadget from another computer. The Config.xml files were identical between the two computers. The Settings.ini were different, but I think the differences were due to the order of gadgets on the screen. The non-working computer didn't have a directory under the Windows Sidebar\Cache directory. I don't know if my prior attempts to fix the issue had caused it to be deleted or if that was the cause of the problem. |

I think this is the first that I've heard of the entire folder being missing, so maybe it was a fluke. Thanks for posting. -- Char Jackson |

BTW I had run across this "fix" in my earlier searches for a solution but as stated above cannot make use of it. Thanks. RW |
