Default EUFI boot ISO

Hi All,

Is Rufus the best way to create a EUFI bootable Flash drive of
the Windows Nein, oops Ten ISO?

I tried using the M$ tool and it created an msdos (legacy in my
bios) only bootable stick. :'(

Many thanks,
-T

You only missed one step :-)

The "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool" from the MicrosoftStore
comes damn close to doing the job. But it missed a detail.

You can't use UEFI boot off the stick, unless it's FAT32.

The above tool formats the stick *NTFS* for me.

So these are the ingredients.

1) Use the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool.
The stick is lookin pretty good at this point,
but it's not FAT32. I tried Paragon Partition Master
on it, but it refuses to convert BCD containing volumes,
back to FAT32. So, we have to "do it the hard way".

2) Copy the files off the stick, into a temporary folder.
The Win10 x64 ISO I was using, the file set was under 4GB total.
I have a RAM Drive just big enough for that on this machine

3) Format the USB stick FAT32.
Step (1) should have already set the Active flag,
and the Active flag should still be there.
I do a Quick Format, to avoid wasting Flash life.

4) Copy the files from the temporary directory,
back onto the (now FAT32) stick.

5) bootsect /nt60 R:

What that does, is puts a boot sector on the USB
stick which happens to be drive letter R: after step 3.

I placed a copy of bootsect.exe into my "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool"
folder, to solve the problem of transferring x64 ISO
setups, using an x32 technician machine. Therefore I
knew where to find a x32 copy of bootsect.exe. If you
keep both x32 and x64 ISOs, you can extract a bootsect.exe.
Or, if the technician machine uses a modern enough Windows,
it'll have a bootsect.exe for you, ready to go.

6) I set my BIOS to UEFI only. The popup boot menu listed
my stick as the only UEFI boot candidate at the moment.
This proves I'm in UEFI mode.

https://s14.postimg.org/r01p9i4fl/screen.gif

How would I solve that problem ? Back out of the install
by "X"ing out, go back to Repair section, find the Command
Prompt, and use "diskpart" to prepare the disk, make
it GPT or whatever.

The install menu didn't seem to have sufficient tools
to handle any possible "starting materials" HDD, but
diskpart can undoubtedly fix this for you.

What kind of useless, piece of crap, writer does not format
the stupid drive to the proper format?!

This must be why everyone tells me to use Rufus.

Thank you for the tips!

I don't have UEFI so I don't know if any of these might work, They are
the ones I have used.

Rufus.
Linux Live USB creator.
Universal USB installer.
Unetbootin.

Rufus.

Only works in my XP VM, but it does work.

Linux Live USB creator.

only work on Linux ISO and is superfluous as "dd" work perfectly
on Live ISOs. And it is buggy as all hell.

Universal USB installer.

Haven't seen that one. Do you have a link?

Unetbootin.

Same issue as Live USB Creator and Fedora's Media Creator

Rene

So far Rufus is the only one that will format and everything
correctly for GPT and EUFI.

Thank you!

I would avoid GPT on a Windows system, except NVMe drives
won't boot without it on the Supermicro X11SAE-M

I would love a Linux solution, so I would not have

win32 disk imager is a good one to use.

i was told that is you try to format a usb stick in ntfs format, it will
brick the usb drive. You can always try it and tell us the results.

If that was a problem, it would have been fixed sometime in the last 20
years.
