FDD Integrity Test Tool
Hi,
I have a 20 year old Gateway desktop PC (has WinXP). Recently I experienced an odd issue using the FDD (original with PC). Unlike problems I had encountered in the past, such as Read Errors or Can't Access A: due to a defective FDD in other PCs, there were NO error messages, but a NEW FD I wrote files to did NOT "show up" in the A: directory! I checked (Format A: /U) this FD in another PC and there were NO bad sectors. I replaced this 20 year old FDD with a spare. Everything is AOK now. Is there a FDD "integrity" test tool? Thank You in advance, John |

The problem with FDDs is they used mechanical alignment. You could write to a floppy with one drive, but it was unreadable in another floppy drive. One drive was out of alignment, but it would know that about itself. Later laser marking was added for media-based alignment, like the Iomega Zip disk, or IR LED to find marks on the media, like the Floptical, instead of relying on the mechanicals (stepper motor) of one drive to match the alignment of the mechanical in another drive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK0QoVNVO2w and lots more found by an online search of "3.5 drive alignment". For consumers, it's not worth paying a shop to realign a FDD. Just replace it, like you did. |
