Copy Beta Win XP SP 2?
"Angel" wrote in message
... How do I get a copy of Beta Win XP SP 2? My PC is working very slow. We are not at the Beta release for SP2. Why do you feel that a Beta release would help your PC run faster? Ensure you have all the latest patches SP1 plus all that is relevant from Windows Update, then start looking at a root cause analysis of your system :- specs, configuration (disks, fragmentation etc etc), the way you work (multiple applications, fast user switching etc) Do not think a service pack will make your PC run faster if there is a more fundamental cause to the perceived slow down. -- Regards, Mike -- Mike Brannigan [Microsoft] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights Please note I cannot respond to e-mailed questions. Hi I guess Angel is thinking about this one: Programs Run Slower After You Install Windows XP SP-1 http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;815411 Yes - I addressed that particular Q article in another post. It is not common to all users of all PCs. If "Angel" has the problem outlined in the Q815411 then they should contact PSS as detailed in the article and get the fix. -- Regards, Mike -- Mike Brannigan [Microsoft] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights Please note I cannot respond to e-mailed questions. When you run a Beta version, you expect it to *give* you problems (you do it because you're interested in helping out identifying problems). That's why it's a beta version, and not a released version--it's known to still have problems and it's being tested further. -- Ken Blake Please reply to the newsgroup |

There can be a number of reason's for system slowdown. Perhaps installed
software is part of the problem. Do you have a number of items running at Start-up above and beyond the typical services XP loads? For example Office 97/2000 installs an app called FastFind which indexes your drive. It can really slow down performance after awhile. Have you tried some maintenance/housekeeping? Doing a Disk Cleanup and Defrag might help. You can try running chkdsk (see Help and Support for info on CHKDSK) to find and fix hard drive problems. You can also try dumping the contents of your Prefetch folder (don't delete the folder just the contents). Prefetch is intended to speed up the launch time for commonly used apps but after a while there can be a performance loss for some systems. This folder should not be regularly dumped but once or twice a month is OK. Your system specs are going to affect speeds as well. If you have less than 256MB of RAM try upgrading to at least that much RAM. Obviously if you have a PII or lower that will affect performance to some degree. I've run XP on a P-200 with 128MB RAM but it was quite slow. Try turning off the 'eye-candy' through System Properties-Advanced Tab if your system is a slower system. -- Harry Ohrn - MS MVP [Shell/User] www.webtree.ca/windowsxp "Angel" wrote in message ...
