Windows 10 is bloated
I had one software app that wouldn't run on xp so decided to get windows 10 since it's the newest version of Windows, as far as I know. It hogged most of a 40 gig hard drive and it turned out the software I needed to run wouldn't run on it either. At least it was given to me by a disgruntled windows user, so it didn't cost anything. Linux is what I run most of the time and it does more things better than windows 10 and uses less space. Windows is also a money hog, just trying to get your money, whichever way it can. It was interesting to see how it's changed, and also how it's not much different than win xp. I can't see anything special about it. Linux can do everything windows can do. Well that's my gripe about windows. If it wasn't for specific software that needs windows I'd never use it. |

Well that's my gripe about windows. If it wasn't for specific software that needs windows I'd never use it. Let's see. (Checks wallet) I paid over $300 for my one and only copy of Win2K. I paid $150 for a single copy of Windows 7. I paid $39.95 each for two copies of Windows 8. It's getting cheaper. I paid nothing for the activated Windows 10 I have here. I see a hogging pattern there. The "images" for each OS are relatively consistent. They're in the 10-12GB range. How do you make it that small ? powercfg /h off # turn off hibernation, eliminate hiberfil.sys Using System control panel, set pagefile to a fixed size. I use 1GB as a ceremonial size, but you can dial that to around 300MB if you want. There could be up to 300MB of "write-once" materials during boot. Now, after a reboot, check the size of C: and maybe there's 12GB of stuff (before you install any programs). The OS size, once you've done that, is relatively consistent from Win7/Win8/Win10. WinXP was an entirely different animal (since it doesn't use the same software maintenance folder structure). Does TurboTax run in Linux ? OK then. And tax season in my country starts soon (when slips arrive to start the tax calculation process). Any Windows software with snuffy licensing mechanisms, isn't going to survive WINE. And at least one clever dude, has written an installer that "detects everything". His installer refuses to install in virtual OSes (Guests) as well as WINE. He has detectors for both. So his software won't be running on your machine, even if he has a "demo" mode. The installer won't allow it. And then we can talk about RAM. Windows 10 can run in 350MB. Does Linux run in 350MB in all 500 cases ? No. Windows 10 has a "1GB spec" for RAM, but the actual kernel will run in 250-350MB. Not really that much larger than the resting size of WinXP (maybe about double what WinXP managed on a good day). If I set a Win10 VM to 250MB, I can *still* open a copy of Notepad! Firefox, not so much. Is it a well designed OS, Windows 10? Actually, no, but it would take another post to explain why. I've had Windows 10 freeze up a number of times, and it doesn't handle corner cases all that well. Task Manager sucks, as it's a regular application with no superpowers. Paul |

I'm surprised it ran well enough for you to know it didn't run well enough for you. and it turned out the software I needed to run wouldn't run on it either. If it's all XP era, of course not. At least it was given to me by a disgruntled windows user, so it didn't cost anything. Linux is what I run most of the time and it does more things better than windows 10 and uses less space. For ancient hardware, Linux is really the only option. Windows is also a money hog, just trying to get your money, whichever way it can. It was interesting to see how it's changed, and also how it's not much different than win xp. I can't see anything special about it. Linux can do everything windows can do. Nope, it can't. If you're talking typing, spreadsheet, web-browsing, and such plain vanilla task, sure Linux works well. For anything specialised not so much. For example, it won't run my favourite word processor. Problem is there's no such thing as a linux desktop computing platform. There's a chaos of dozens/hundreds of distros each with it's own set of quirks/compatibilities/interfaces/procedures/defaults... And the next release will be different again. The good news for linux is that windows is descending into the same chaos model. Well that's my gripe about windows. If it wasn't for specific software that needs windows I'd never use it. Me neither, but there IS a lot of software that needs it. In the US, do I really need to have my car's steering wheel on the left side? Of course not. It would drive just fine with the wheel on the other side. Until I tried to get out of a parking structure and the robot that accepts payment is on the wrong side. Or until my decades of experience led me to behave as if the steering wheel were on the correct side and I crashed. Trying to switch back and forth between left and right is an accident waiting to happen. Pick something and stick with it. If you think about what you want to do, you choose windows for ordinary user desktop use. If you want a hobby, or just to claim you're better/smarter, you choose desktop linux. Going with the flow is often easier than opposing the incumbent os. M$ failed to unseat Android. You've got the right end of the stick: Start with the tasks you need to perform, and go from there. Just for interest's sake, what is the program that you can't run on Linux? If you skedaddle over to a Linux newsgroup, someone may know of a Linux work-alike or alternative. Just for interest's sake, why would you want to skedaddle out of your way to search for a different way to do something you already know how to do? Linux users act as if they were in a vacuum. The world is interconnected. If you want to communicate/interact with others, you gotta conform to the norms. Start preaching from the book of linux at bridge club and see how far you get. Unless you're a newbie, you've likely got terabytes of history that may not be dragable/dropable into a linux environment. And yeah, windows is bloated. |

I can't see anything special about it. I no longer see adverts for Office. And there are some options you can use in Settings to control some of the other things. But nobody removes the "free games" and I know there's still some Flappy Birds I didn't particularly want, on the hard drive. That habit hasn't changed. Something that really irritated me, was when some sort of Disney Corporation content was placed on the hard drive. Holds up clove of garlic and an upside-down cross to make it go away. I don't play Whack-A-Mole with that stuff, because that would be admitting they've won. As long as it stays hidden, and doesn't appear as a Tile on the screen, it's... OK. If they're spying on me... they're doing a good job. There's always a pizza truck with antennas on top, parked out on the street in front of the house. It's nice being able to walk across the lawn and order an extra large pepperoni. And watch as the truck drives off to pick it up. And it's different than WinXP, because they've hidden the Control Panels so people won't find them :-) Hows that for an improvement ? Typing "control" in the Run box, will pop it up for you. See how friendly ? And if you open Settings, open Windows Update and click the "check for updates" button, you're classed as a "Seeker". Heaven help us for what other names they have for us. Rather than spying, they've probably got a psych profile for each person using the product ("habitual defragmenter and CCleaner user"). Paul |
