Major dns problem PLEASE !! H A V I N G W I T H D R A W S
I have 2 setups at 2 different locations with the same problem:
1. Home 3 pc's 1 laptop with XP Pro on SP1 all updated besides the SP2- Cable mode to a router and then cat5 to each machine - setup for dhcp. Erything was working fine, then one machine started getting popups (I have a popup blocker on each machine) but it must not have worked. I ran spybot, adware and Hijack This and tried to remove everything rebooted now I cannot get to any web sites. I set it up on a static ip pointing to the router for the gateway and ran ipconfig on one of the other machines and wrote down the dns servers that it was running and put those numbers into the machine that couldn't get out. I can ping any ip address in the world including the dns server and get a reply back, when I ping a name I get no reply. 2. A client of mine 3 pc's windows 2k, 6 dummy workstations, cable modem to router Same thing happened to him (it happened to him 1st) we ran spybot (over the phone) and removed several things but he cannot ping a name or get to the www sites, but he can ping any ip address in the world. He was set for static and I changed it to automatic, didnt work changed it back to static and put dns numbers in and still no luck.. On #1 i just ran the following netsh int ip reset, but that didnt help. I removed client for MS Network. I pull my hd out and put it on a working machine and remove misc files (vbouncer etc) still nope.. I am in need of any help !!!!! |

Dave, Many times, removal of spyware, using AA, HJT, and / or SSD, will cause a corruption of the LSP / Winsock layer in your network. DNS resolution is affected by the LSP / Winsock subsystem. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259 If XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window. Give LSP-Fix http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm, WinsockFix http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257, or WinsockXPFix http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html a shot. If no help yet, reset TCP/IP. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357 Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command window. You have to specify a log name (ie "c:\netsh.txt"), or the command won't work. -- Cheers, Chuck Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing. My email is AT DOT actual address pchuck sonic net. |
