I have done something bad I think. Recently I tried to
reinstall XP on my emachine and it was not succesfull. The
system couldn't complete and my computer is now useless.
From what I can see it started, didn't finish, partitioned
my hardrive, removed required information to operate the
system properly. What can I do to fix this problem, buy a
new hardrive?

If your hard drive is damaged then yes you will need to purchase a new one
but that is generally rare and would not have been caused by simply
installing Windows. Hard Drives do eventually wear out though. However I
would try reinstalling again before taking a drastic measure like purchasing
a new drive.

Follow the detailed information here to reformat and reinstall XP
